Historic Standing Liberty And Walking Liberty Set
The 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter and Walking Liberty Half Dollar represent pivotal moments in U.S. coin design. Following President Teddy Roosevelt’s criticism of outdated designs, these two coins debuted as part of a bold new direction. The Standing Liberty Quarter, with Liberty’s exposed breast, sparked public outcry, leading to a quick redesign. Despite the controversy, these coins circulated widely, making them part of everyday transactions during a turbulent time in world history. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar, featuring Liberty walking towards the sun, became one of the most beloved coin designs ever.
Standing Liberty Quarters And Walking Liberty Half Dollars Shine!
Here you can secure both these coins in this two-piece set that features coins from 1917—their second year of issue for each coin. 1917 saw President Woodrow Wilson begin his second term, the Chicago White Sox defeat the New York Giants in six games to win the World Series, and the United States sending troops overseas to fight in World War I.
Standing Liberty Quarter – Designed by Hermon Atkins MacNeil, the Standing Liberty Quarter was disparaged by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice as being “immoral.” Political pressure forced a design change in 1917 and as a result, those 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty quarters are both scarce and desirable today. Issued from 1916 to 1930, the U.S. Mint struck more than 226 million Standing Liberty Quarters and of that number only 5% feature the “bare breast” design.
Walking Liberty Half Dollar – Featuring Adolph A. Weinman’s classic design of “Walking Liberty,” this half-dollar coin is struck in 12.5 grams of highly pure 90% silver. Issued from 1916 to 1947, the Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar series is even more popular today than when it circulated during the first half of the 20th Century. The design is so revered that when the U.S. Mint introduced its American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986 it used Weinman’s iconic design!
