1926–1963 Sesquicentennial & Franklin Half Dollar 2-pc Set AU
Liberty Bell Two-Piece Set
If you fished these two coins out of your pocket and took a quick glance at them, you’d be forgiven if you mistook them for being the same coin. After all, the reverse of each 50-cent piece features a beautiful engraving of the Liberty Bell. But that’s only “half” the story. One coin, a one-year-only commemorative issue, was struck nearly 100 years ago to pay tribute to the 150th anniversary of American Independence. The other, struck 40 years later, was the Last Franklin Half Dollar struck before it was replaced by the Kennedy Half Dollar.
Two Coins, One Design
The fact of the matter is that the 1963 Franklin Half Dollar’s Liberty Bell image was designed by the same man who designed the 1926 Sesquicentennial Half Dollar, John R. Sinnock, the eighth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1925 to 1947. Mint director Nellie Tayloe Ross had directed Sinnock to prepare designs for a Franklin Half Dollar in 1947 and his designs were based on his earlier work. Unfortunately, Sinnock died suddenly that year at the age of 59 before he completed the task and the project was completed by his successor, Gilroy Roberts.
