When Jesse Owens Humiliated Adolf Hitler
When you think of Olympic athletes, Usain Bolt or Simone Biles might come to mind. But arguably nobody made a greater impact than Jesse Owens, a gifted African-American athlete who excelled in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4 x 100 meter relay. Owens’ record speaks for itself: In 1935, he set three world records within the space of an hour at a track meet in Michigan.
Owens Shatters Hitler’s Claims Of A Master Race
But his shining moment came in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. German athletes, determined not to let Nazi Dictator Adolph Hitler down, were eager to live up to his wild claims that Aryan German were the “master race.” Instead, Jesse Owens humiliated Hitler by winning four gold medals. The story goes that der Führer was so incensed after Owens won his first medal that he ground his fingernails into his chair and then stormed out of the stadium so he wouldn’t have to congratulate him on his victory.
This set includes a 1936 Walking Liberty Half Dollar and a 1934–1935 Germany Third Reich 5 Reichsmark that circulated during the historic 1936 Summer Games.
