The Prominent Americans Silver Commemorative Half Dollar Set

The United States Mint has a long and storied history of striking special commemorative silver coins. And now with this offer, you have the opportunity to get a pair of commemorative silver half dollars – two coins that represent the last vintage half dollars struck by the U.S. Mint before taking nearly a three-decade break until it would strike another commemorative coin!

This set includes the Booker T. Washington Memorial Half Dollar, struck between 1946 and 1951, and the Carver-Washington Half Dollar, honoring both Booker T. Washington and botanist George Washington Carver, struck from 1951 to 1954. Each coin was struck in 90% fine silver and comes in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition. In addition, this two-piece set will come beautifully presented in a display case and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. Dates vary.

When these coins were released in the late 1940s and early 1950s, they were met with little fanfare. They had been released at the end of the commemorative coin craze that had dogged the Treasury Department through the first half of the 20th Century, and many of these coins either languished in bank vaults or were melted for their silver content. After their final year of release, the U.S. Mint held off on striking another commemorative silver coin for 28 years until it released the 1982 George Washington Half Dollar.

Today, collectors have taken a more positive view of these coins. Last struck more than 65 years ago, these commemorative silver half dollars offer a unique insight into the fabric of our nation’s history and should be part of any collector’s set of commemorative coins.
