United States Proof Sets are the absolute pinnacle of perfection featuring the U.S. Mint’s finest examples of that year’s circulating coin designs. Proof coins are struck from specially prepared dies and are lavished with much more care than regular circulation coins. Because of this time-consuming attention to detail, only a limited number of Proof Sets are struck each year. Most people never get a chance to even see these sets, much less own one. And among modern-era sets issued during the three-decade period between 1970 and 1999, two U.S. Proof Sets stand out as having the lowest mintages: 1996 and 1997.
