The Pocket Change of Gettysburg

Hailed as the “High Water Mark of the Confederacy,” the Battle of Gettysburg fought July 1-3, 1863 was a turning point in the Civil War. The Union victory ended the South’s hopes for foreign intervention and became the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln’s famous “Gettysburg Address." Throughout the battle, soldiers carried coins like these; an 1863 Indian Head Cent, an 1852-1863 Half Dime and an 1852-1863 Quarter — the pocket change of Gettysburg.

The Battle of Gettysburg involved the largest number of casualties suffered in any battle fought during the Civil War. The Army of Northern Virginia commanded by General Robert E. Lee had never before ventured so far north only to be checked by the Army of the Potomac commanded by General George Meade. When the dust finally settled, the fights that had raged at such places as Little Round Top, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den, the Peach Orchard and Pickett's Charge Pickett on the Union line on Cemetery Ridge became hallowed ground.

More than a million people visit the Gettysburg National Military Park every year. Were these coins recovered from the battlefield? Were they carried in the pockets of soldiers during the fateful battle fought more than 150 years ago? Who knows, but they will make an outstanding addition to any collection! Each coin comes in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition and each set comes housed in a 3" x 5" custom display card protected in a clear holder. Dates will vary.
