1863 Pattern Transitional Dollar Replicas
In 1861, M.R. Watkinson wrote a letter to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase calling his attention to the fact that recognition of God had been overlooked when designing the country’s currency. They decided the area above the eagle’s head on the silver dollar coin’s reverse would be the perfect spot for the now famous motto “In God We Trust” and patterns of these coins were struck in silver, copper, and aluminum.
Gobrecht’s Goddess-Like Liberty Turns To God
The obverse on these pattern coins features the same Seated Liberty image designed in 1836 by Christian Gobrecht, the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, which depicted a goddess-like Lady Liberty seated upon a rock holding a Liberty pole topped by a Phrygian Cap of freedom. The reverse, on the other hand, includes the motto in a ribbon that spreads across the top of the design above the eagle. The design was later adopted for regular issue coinage in 1866 and was struck in silver with a reeded edge. Needless to say, the patterns are extremely rare and only a few specimens are known to exist in numismatic hands.
