Turn Of The Century Indian Head Cents!

One of the timeless classics of American coinage, the Indian Head Cent first appeared in 1859 and was struck until 1909. From 1864-1909, the United States Mint struck more than 1.69 billion bronze Indian Head Cents—by comparison, the U.S. Mint struck over one billion Lincoln cents for circulation in 2018 ALONE! The coin’s obverse features Liberty wearing an Indian headdress, which incorrectly led the general public to identify the image as an “Indian Head.” The coin also depicts a simple laurel wreath around the One Cent denomination on the reverse. Designed by James B. Longacre, the U.S. Mint’s 4th chief engraver, the clean, uncluttered design of this coin simply isn’t possible on today’s coinage due to the inscriptions required on modern coinage. It’s an absolute must-have for any American coin collection, and for many of us was the first retired design we collected!

One Of America’s Most Beloved Coins

The Indian Head Cent is a beloved U.S. coin that holds an honored place in both numismatics and Americana. Some sources say Longacre’s rendering of Liberty was based on his daughter Sarah. While this has not been confirmed, the portrait does show some similarities to drawings of her. These three Indian Head Cents, dated 1899, 1900, and 1901, are an important part of the American past. Though they were struck around the turn of the century, the design goes back even further and was around for the coinage act of 1864 and the American Civil War. In 1909, the Indian Head Cent was replaced by the Lincoln Cent. Your three-piece set will come packaged in a presentation wallet with a storycard. Don’t wait to secure yours.
