“O Say, Can You See...”
Though it had been used by the United State Navy since 1889, it wasn’t until 1931 that a congressional resolution made the Star-Spangled Banner the nation’s official national anthem. With 2021 marking the 90th Anniversary of this patriotic composition, we’ve assembled a three-piece set that pays tribute to the immortal words penned by poet Francis Scott Key.
The Story Behind The National Anthem
As almost everyone knows, Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the song on September 14, 1814, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry near Baltimore, Maryland during the War of 1812. The 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet’s words were later sung to a drinking song, “To Anacreon in Heaven,” which first surfaced sometime around 1776 as a club anthem of the Anacreontic Society, an amateur gentleman’s club in London.
This set consists of a three American Flag-themed coins:
- 1916–1947 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Featuring Adolph A. Weinman’s classic design of “Walking Liberty,” the half-dollar coin issued from 1916-1947 is hailed as one of the most beautiful coins ever struck. It’s so revered that when the U.S. Mint introduced its American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986 it used Weinman’s iconic design! Date our choice.
- 2013 Fort McHenry Quarter. The design of this America the Beautiful Quarters® Program represents the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine during the “Defenders Day” celebration, considered the centerpiece annual event held at Fort McHenry. The fireworks symbolize the “rocket’s red glare,” linking the fort to its historic past.
- 2019 American Memorial Quarter. This coin is also from the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program and shows a young woman in traditional attire at the front of the Flag Circle and Court of Honor at the Northern Mariana Islands. She is resting her hand on the plaque whose text honors the sacrifice of those who died in the Marianas Campaign of World War II.
The complete set will come beautifully housed in a custom display folder suitable for display anywhere in your home or office. Get one for yourself and anyone on your list who proudly stands during the National Anthem!
