She started out with fanfare and promise – and in the blink of an eye, she was gone. Minted for the first time in 1979, the short-lived Susan B. Anthony Dollar was not only meant to replace the larger Eisenhower Dollar, but the government also had high hopes that it would replace the one dollar bill as well. If the plan worked the country stood to save billions because a coin lasts much longer than paper currency. Alas, the coin never quite caught on and was struck from only 1979 to 1981 and for one last gasp in 1999 to meet the demands of vending machines and ensure the availability of dollar coins until the introduction of the new dollar coin in 2000.

The prevailing theory is that the new Susan B. Anthony Dollar was too close in size to a U.S. quarter. A situation that caused confusion at cash registers and resulted in an overall rejection of the coin by people across the country who didn’t accept it as their new currency. Perhaps in response to the public’s disdain for the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, the U.S. Mint decided not to issue a circulating version of the coin in 1981, instead striking it only for U.S. Mint and Proof Sets. As a result, the 1981 Philadelphia (P), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S) mintages were the smallest in the series.
