The First Four Years Of Silver Kennedy Half Dollars Struck At The Denver Mint

In 1964, the United States Mint released the first Kennedy Half-Dollar to pay tribute to President John F. Kennedy following his assassination the previous year. This four-piece set consists of the first four Kennedy Half Dollars struck at the Denver Mint. The first year coin was minted in 90% silver, then the silver content was lowered to 40% through 1970, so each coin in this set is 90% to 40% silver. In 1968 and 1969, the only Kennedy Half Dollars minted were in Denver, and the 1970 coin is key date because it was only released in 1970 U.S. Mint Sets, and not for circulation.

The Face Of America’s Half Dollar

The story of the Kennedy Half Dollar is now numismatic legend: after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963, Congress moved quickly to ensure that the U.S. Mint would be able to create a commemorative half dollar featuring the former president’s profile along with the Presidential Seal. The president’s wife, Jackie Kennedy, was given the choice for which denomination she wanted her husband to appear on and chose the half dollar because she did not want to see George Washington removed from the quarter. The coins were released in January of the following year—just a few short months after JFK’s passing. The design proved to be so popular that it replaced the existing Benjamin Franklin Half Dollar, and Kennedy has remained the face of the denomination ever since.
