Honoring the Iron Horse
Lou Gehrig, nicknamed the “Iron Horse” for his record of playing in 2,130 consecutive games, was one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He played for the New York Yankees for his entire career, which lasted from 1923 to 1939 — and would likely have lasted longer had he not been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a deadly affliction that has since become known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
On July 4, 1939, Gehrig made one of the most memorable speeches in all of sports, retiring with dignity and grace. In it, he famously said “For the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.” This set brings together the circulating coinage of 1939 — a Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Mercury Dime, Washington Quarter and Walking Liberty Half Dollar — all in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition, beautifully housed together in a custom-designed holder. You’ll also receive a baseball card and copy of Gehrig’s famous speech.
