These Nevada Goldbacks Will Put Some Gold Back In Your Collection
There’s a voluntary unit of local currency that exists in Nevada called “Goldbacks,” 24-karat gold foil notes that are crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of highly pure 99.9% gold. Though not officially recognized by the United States government as legal tender, many local merchants and vendors are already accepting this new form if currency as payment. What’s more, they can be accepted in other states that allow the usage of these intriguing and beautifully designed notes.
Wafer-Thin Gold Foil Currency Notes
Each wafer-thin note is coated with a protective plastic cover so it can be circulated, exchanged, and used without the gold tearing. They’re meant to be used just like cash to purchase items. If you travel through Nevada, you’ll probably even see signs that say “Goldbacks Accepted Here” to let you know these fractional gold units can be spent just like any other form of legal-tender currency. Anyone can own Goldbacks, even if they aren’t a resident of Nevada.
Representations Of Allegorical Figures
Not only is each Goldback crafted in increments of 1/1000th of an ounce of pure gold (1 Aurum), but they are also fabulous examples of the engraver’s art—and the larger the denomination, the bigger the note. The design on each denomination features an allegorical depiction of one of the lady virtues and combines her with distinct symbols representing different aspects of Nevada history and culture. The notes offered here feature wording that says “Specie Legal Tender Instrument” instead of “Voluntary Local Currency” that appeared on prior notes. The notes in this set are:
- The 1 Aurum 1/1000th-oz gold note features the allegorical figure of Caritas—Lady Charity—represented in the form of a Mother Mary amid a design that shows St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Austin, Nevada, the state’s oldest Catholic church
- The 5 Aurum 1/200th-oz gold note features the allegorical figure of Lady Sophia—Athena—the Roman goddess of wisdom. She is shown with a pickaxe in honor of the state’s mining industry and the state’s state bird, the Mountain Blue Bird, rests on her on her shoulder.
- The 10 Aurum 1/100th-oz gold note features the allegorical figure of Lady Justice (Justita). Unlike how Justice is normally portrayed, her eyes are wide open due to the fact the Nevada justices were tasked with watching over a large region during the Wild West era and needed to keep both eyes open to do so.
- The 25 Aurum 1/40th-oz gold note depicts Fortitudine—Lady Fortitude—as Nike, the Greek winged goddess of victory. Other design elements include Red Rock Canyon, the state’s first National Conservation Area, and a sagebrush, the state flower of Nevada.
- The 50 Aurum 1/20th-oz gold note features Lady Liberty (Libertas). In this design, she is depicted as Aphrodite, the goddess of love, as seen at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Other design elements include her right hand a Bristlecone Pine, Nevada’s state tree, and several Desert Big Horn Sheep, Nevada’s official state animal.
