6 Morgans, All 5 Mints, 5 Decades, Quality Grades!

The Morgan Silver Dollar is the most popular, most-collected, most talked about vintage silver dollar ever! In part that’s because of its reputation as the coin that helped build America’s Wild West, and in part it’s because of its iconic design. With that in mind, we challenged our buyers to assemble as many of these special Six-Coin Morgan Decades Collections as possible, and man, did they deliver!

This is a neat collection of six Morgan Silver Dollars that includes the first year of release, the last year of release, at least one coin from each of the five decades the series was minted, from all five mints that struck the coin—including the 1884 Morgan struck in Carson City, which is in much sought-after Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition:

  • The 1884-CC Morgan Dollar from the Carson City Mint—The election of Grover Cleveland in the 1884 Presidential Election spelled doom for the Carson City Mint. The Democrats were not pro-silver and all the Republicans who worked at the Carson City Mint were let go. Also, to cut the budget, President Cleveland ordered the Carson City Mint to close, which it did in 1885. That makes these 1884-dated Morgan Silver Dollars available here especially significant considering that of the 650 million Morgans that were ever minted, only 13.8 million—an astounding 2%—were struck at the Carson City Mint and have the “CC” mint mark!

Morgans From Both The 19th And 20th Centuries

What makes this collection so special is not just the fact that it’s a handful of vintage Morgan Silver Dollars, it’s also a tour of American history. It features Morgans from all five decades the coin was struck during the 1870s, 1880s, 1890s, 1900s, and 1920s—including key first and last years of issues! Each coin has its own story, and when you combine those stories, you have a chronicle of our country! The other five coins in this set all come in Extremely Fine (XF) condition. They are:

  • The 1878-S First-Year Morgan Dollar from the San Francisco Mint—no collection is complete without the first year. Those first Morgans made a big splash because they were the first U.S. Mint release of large-sized Silver Dollar coins for circulation! This Collection includes one of those first year, 144-year-old, 1878 Morgan Dollars struck at the historic San Francisco Mint, and featuring an “S” mint mark. This 1878-S Morgan represents just 1.49% of all vintage Morgans struck.
  • The 1889-O Morgan Dollar from the New Orleans Mint—all Morgan collections should include a Morgan from the historic New Orleans Mint. New Orleans is the only mint to be operated by three different sovereign governments: the U.S. government, the state of Louisiana and the Confederacy. This set includes a 133-year-old 1889-O Morgan struck at this iconic mint, featuring an “O” mint mark. This 1889-O Morgan represents just 1.81% of all vintage Morgans struck.
  • The 1896 (P) Morgan Dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint—any Morgan collection should include one struck at what is known affectionately as the “Mother Mint”, the original U.S. Mint, opened in 1792. In this Collection, you’ll receive one of these 126-year-old 1896 Morgan Silver Dollars—featuring no mint mark which identifies the coin as being struck in Philadelphia. This 1896 Philadelphia-struck Morgan represents just 1.52% of all vintage Morgans struck.
  • The low mintage 1904 (P) Morgan Dollar, the “original last struck” Morgan from the Philadelphia Mint—1904 was expected to be the last year of the Morgan Silver Dollar. And it was…for 17 years. From 1904 to 1920, no Morgans were struck. But then in 1921, the U.S. Mint surprised the world and struck Morgans again for one last year. The “original last Morgan” in this set—1904 (P), again with no mint mark—is now 118 years old. Just 0.42% of all vintage Morgans struck were 1904 (P)’s, making this Morgan a key date in the series!
  • The Last-Year 1921-D Morgan Dollar, struck at the Denver Mint—a truly classic collection requires a last year issue. And the 1921 Morgan Dollars struck at the Denver Mint are not only from the last year vintage Morgan large-sized Silver Dollars were minted, but they also represent the ONLY year the Morgan was struck in Denver, making this coin even more special! These 1921-D Morgans, featuring the “D” mint mark, are now 101 years old and represent less than 3.1% of all vintage Morgans ever struck!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode, the Morgan Silver Dollar is a big coin measuring 38.1 mm in diameter. When this coin was plunked down on a counter, its weight meant real money, pure and simple.
  • LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
  • EXTREMELY FINE CONDITION – Each coin in your 1878–1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Five-Piece Decades Collection will come in nice Extremely Fine to Brilliant Uncirculated (XF–BU) condition.
  • THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence in any condition!
