Paying Tribute To Iroquois Culture And History

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honor these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe. The coins are also recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century. The Native American Mint’s coin sets honoring different tribes continues here with the 2025 Iroquois Tribe Set.

One-Year-Only Designs Honor Iroquois Culture

The set contains a one-cent, five-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, 50-cent, and $1 coin, each featuring a common obverse. The one-year-only reverse designs depict items, animals, and people central to the Iroquois way of life. Of particular note is the 5-cent coin that shows a mask worn by the tribe’s False Face Society. These wooden masks were carved from living trees and worn during rituals during which sick people were cured. The 50-cents coin features a turtle, symbolic of the tribe’s creation story in which the earth was created on the back of a turtle and it was there where all life began to grow. The $1 coin shows the famous Iroquois Indian Chief Pau Puk Keewis, better known as Hiawatha, who is famous for uniting the Five Nations—Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Mohawk—into a political confederacy.

The Rich Legacy Of The Iroquois Nation

Known for their wood-and-bark longhouses, the Iroquois tribes have inhabited the areas of Ontario and upstate New York for more than 4,000 years. Prior to the arrival of European colonists, the Iroquois consisted of several tribes that had banded together to form a political system consisting of two houses. Representatives from the Seneca and Mohawk tribes met in one house and representatives from the Oneida and Cayuga tribes met in the other. Because of the sophisticated structure of their society, the Iroquois proved to be a tough foe facing settlers attempting to carve out a new life in early America. One of the tribe’s greatest admirers was none other than Benjamin Franklin, and some historians even believe that some aspects of the Constitution are based on Iroquois ideas!
