Australia Commemorates The Historic Succession From Queen To King

The death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022 set in motion a transformation in world coinage not seen in 70 years. That’s because the beloved monarch’s effigy appeared on coins issued by 35 different countries during her reign, and they would all have to be replaced. Among the countries changing from Her Majesty’s portrait to that of her son, King Charles III, was Australia where the Royal Australian Mint has just released a six-coin commemorative set that features all five official portraits of The Queen along with the new official portrait of The King!

Set Chronicles The Life Of Queen Elizabeth II

Ranging in denomination from a Copper-Nickel (CuNi) 5 cents coin all the way up to an Aluminum-Bronze (AlBr) $2 coin, this impressive set chronicles the life of Queen Elizabeth from her ascension to the throne in 1952 when she transitioned from a 26-year-old Princess of Wales to the becoming the Queen of England, to her final years as a much-loved 96-year-old monarch who celebrated her Platinum Jubilee marking her 70 years on the throne.

  • The Queen’s first coin portrait showing her as a young girl was designed by Mary Gillick and was adopted at the beginning of her reign in 1952. It appears on the Copper-Nickel 5-cent coin that measures 19.41 mm in diameter.
  • Arnold Machin designed the next effigy that was unveiled in 1964 showing her as a young woman. It appears on the Copper-Nickel 10-cent coin that measures 23.6 mm in diameter.
  • The next effigy of The Queen was designed in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf and showed an older, yet still-youthful portrait of The Queen. It appears on the Copper-Nickel 20-cent coin that measures 28.52 mm in diameter.
  • In 1998, a more mature portrait of Her Majesty designed by Ian Rank-Broadley was unveiled. It appears in this set on the Copper-Nickel 50-cent coin that measures 31.51 mm in diameter.
  • Her final portrait designed by Jody Clark was unveiled in 2015 and depicted Her Majesty wearing the Diamond Diadem. It appears in this set on the Aluminum-Bronze $1 coin that measures 25 mm in diameter.

One Of The Most Important Events In World Numismatics

The sixth coin in the set is a $2 Aluminum-Bronze coin measuring 20.5 mm in diameter that features the effigy of King Charles III as designed by Daniel Thorne. Each coin comes in gleaming Uncirculated condition and the complete set will be housed in its original mint packaging that consists of a six-coin capsule, complete with a presentation card and an outer carton. Together these six coins commemorate the historic succession from Queen to King. Not only does this set represent an important episode in Australian numismatics but marks a momentous event throughout the coin world.
