Ancient Times Soap Opera Denarius
Back in the days of the Roman Empire, they didn’t have Entertainment Tonight, TMZ or a host of social media platforms to spread all the juicy gossip. What they DID have were coins, and if the one we have available in this offer had all of today’s modern communication methods, its story would get big TV ratings! It comes from the Roman Empire’s Severan Dynasty, the 4th dynasty of Rome that lasted from 193-235, and features a portrait of Julia Domna, the wife of Septimius Severus—Rome’s emperor from 193 to 211.
One Of The Roman Empire’s Most Influential Women
An intelligent, talented, and beautiful woman, Julia Domna exercised great influence during Septimius’ reign during which she often accompanied him on his military campaigns and was respected by the officers and troops for her military advice and political opinions. It was widely acknowledged even by her contemporaries that she practically administered the empire for her sons, Geta and Caracalla, who became co-emperors of Rome following the death of their father. Her sons hated each other, however, and refused to cooperate with each other except in her presence. Soon after the death of their father in 211, Caracalla killed Geta during what was supposed to be a peace conference arranged by Julia Domna so the brothers could resolve their differences. The sight of Geta dying in her arms unnerved Julia and left her so distraught that she starved herself to death.
The Soul-Crushing Grief Of Julia Domna
Caracalla didn’t just murder his brother in life, he tried to erase his memory by executing most of Geta’s supporters and had his image removed from all paintings, coins, and statues. Geta’s name was struck from papyrus records, and it became a capital offence even to speak or write his name. Caracalla was so wicked and obsessed with removing any trace of his brother’s memory that he forced Julia to act joyful and happy in the days and weeks after Geta’s murder. He even had Julia followed to make sure she complied with his orders. This after her younger son was literally butchered while he cowered in her lap! It’s no wonder she chose death over living with the grief.
