One of the most despotic men ever to hold the title of Roman Emperor was Nero, who famously fiddled while Rome burned. After Rome nearly burned to the ground, Nero blamed Christians for starting the blaze. What followed was a brutal crackdown on the followers of Christ that led to the executions of Peter and Paul. But Nero wasn’t the only psychopath holding a position of power in the Roman Empire at that time. In Rome’s troublesome province of Judea, the Jews were driven to anger by Herod Agrippa II, who ruled Judea as a Roman client and was rumored to be in an incestuous relationship with his sister. Jewish priests were further incensed after Herod raised the height of the watchtower at his new palace so that he could see into the Temple courts. In response, the priests increased the height of the Temple wall, blocking the view from the palace’s new wing.
The Apostle Paul Appears Before Nero
It was amid this tableau of acrimony that Porcius Festus was elevated to the post of Judea’s 5th procurator, a position he held from about 58 to 62. During this time, he dealt with the Jew’s anger toward Paul the Apostle and urged that he be put to death. By this time, Paul was a Roman citizen and having already made an appearance before Herod Agrippa. Paul next appeared before Festus, who was loathe to submit to the whims of the Jewish mobs. Instead, he had Paul shipped off to Rome where he figured an audience with Emperor Nero would finish the matter once and for all. Unfortunately for Paul, by the time he arrived in Rome, Nero was in full persecution mode and had the famous apostle beheaded.
