The Triumphal Cross in the Church of Mary in Lübeck, Germany is a massive oak carving wrapped in mystery. Completed around 750 years ago, the original 5' x 10' Crucifix was carved from oak between 1270 and 1280. It’s not known for sure who carved the impressive sculpture, but we do know it was bought and paid for by Bishop Albert Krummedick, who in return for his payment, appears as one of the people depicted at the base of the cross. Along with such Biblical figures as the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and John the Apostle, the good Bishop is shown kneeling in prayer before the cross. Based on research, it is believed that Bernd Notke, and acclaimed German medieval artist who was hailed as “The Michelangelo of the North,” is the person responsible for the breathtaking piece.
