An internationally acclaimed master goldsmith, carver and sculptor, Bill Reid was born in 1920 to a Haida mother and an American father. As he grew older, Reid began investigating his mother’s culture and soon incorporated Haida traditions with his own aesthetic to create pieces of art that captured the public’s imagination and came to represent the craftsmanship of Canada’s indigenous people. In 2020, to pay tribute to the 100th anniversary of Haida artist Bill Reid’s birth, The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) released this commemorative coin featuring his iconic art.

Cultural Significance of the Grizzly Bear

This legal tender $2 base metal coin features an outer ring of three-ply nickel finish plated steel, and an inner core of three-ply brass finish plated aluminum bronze. The spectacular design on this colorized version features a red, white and black rendition of Reid’s Xhuwaji, Haida Grizzly Bear. The design was originally created as a ceremonial drum for the Sam family of Ahousat, British Columbia in 1988. Today, the drum is part of the Artists for Kids permanent collection. In Haida culture, the Grizzly Bear represents strength, family, vitality, courage and health. Reid’s design features traditional red and black colors and shows the bear with large flaring nostrils representing his fierce nature, and a protruding tongue to symbolize the Haida people passing on their stories and traditions through word of mouth. The Haida people hail from the Haida Gwaii archipelago located off the west coast of Canada and immediately south of Alaska. In some translations, the island’s name means, “Island of the People.”
