Canada’s Calling And Have They Got A Proof Set That Really Rings A Bell!
Much like the United States Mint’s variety of annual Mint Sets, our neighbors to the north produce their own sets. One of the most popular of those sets is the Royal Canadian Mint’s Silver Proof Set that each year features a new $1 coin that cannot be found in any other coin set and isn’t released for circulation. For 2022, this unique coin pays tribute to Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone.
Canada’s Connection To The Invention Of The Telephone
For most people, the history of the telephone begins in 1875 with Alexander Graham Bell speaking the first words in his invention “Watson, come here—I want to see you!” to his lab assistant Thomas A. Watson at the laboratory at his boarding house in Boston. An American invention, right? After all, Bell did receive a patent from the United States in 1876. But Bell actually split his time between the United States and Canada. Born in Scotland, he emigrated to Canada in 1870 and his first home there in Brantford, Ontario is now listed as one of Canada’s National Historic Sites. Bell passed away in 1922 at his estate in Nova Scotia at the age of 75, insisting to the very end that the telephone was not his greatest achievement. In fact, Graham was so bothered by the telephone that he refused to keep one in his workshop because he claimed it intruded on his real work as a scientist!
Gorgeous Proof Finish
The Royal Canadian Mint’s annual Silver Proof Set features some of the highest quality possible coins struck for collectors, all beautifully displayed in a stylish book format presentation case. The coins range in denomination from five cents to $2, the highlight, of course, is this unique $1 coin featuring Alexander Bell struck to commemorate the 175th anniversary of his birth as well as the centennial of his passing. The beautiful coin has also been selectively plated in gold, and, like the other six coins in the set, was beautifully struck in highly pure 99.99% silver. The gleaming gold-plating on the Alexander Graham Bell Proof Dollar, however, naturally draws one’s eye to the portrait of the inventor and the depiction of his most famous invention: the telephone.
