Struck at the prestigious Royal Canadian Mint in a troy ounce of highly pure 99.99% gold, the Gold Maple Leaf earns its name from the Walter Ott’s incredibly detailed design of a maple leaf that graces its reverse. In addition to the maple leaf, the word “CANADA” arches over the image, while the coin’s purity, “9999,” is inscribed on both sides of the leaf. An inscription along the bottom half of the rim reads, “PURE GOLD 1 OZ ARGENT PUR.”

 

The Three Queens

 

The obverse on these 1979–2023 Maple Leaf coins features the regal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II along with “5 DOLLARS” legal-tender denomination and the coin’s year date. Over the course of its run from 1979 to 2023, the Maple Leaf features three different portraits of The Queen. From 1979 to 1989, the coin featured Arnold Machin’s design. It was followed by Canadian artist Dora de PéderyHunt’s design from 1990 to 2002. The third and final version is Susanna Blunt’s design that graced the coin from 2003 to 2023.
