Modern Coin Breathes New Life Into A Victorian-Era Masterpiece
When it comes world-class designers producing beautiful coins, Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint is unsurpassed. To pay homage to its historic engravers and their greatest masterpieces, the Royal Mint is breathing new life into those iconic designs thanks to modern striking techniques. That means that now, after more than 175 years, collectors have the chance to own the world’s most sought-after coin designs with an epic series of limited-edition gold and silver Proofs.
The opportunity here comes from the third release of “The Great Engravers” series and features one of the world’s most sought-after designs—the Gothic Crown, which was first issued in 1847 during the 10th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s reign. It was designed by William Wyon, who was a Second Engraver at the Royal Mint from 1817 to 1828, and chief Engraver until his death in 1851. Like the first two releases of the Great Engravers series, this release quickly sold out at the mint!
Among The Most Beautiful British Coins Ever Minted
Wyon’s Gothic Crown design is among the most beautiful British coins ever minted. It was intended for a new British silver crown that would feature an update of the “Young Head” effigy of Victoria that was struck at the beginning of her reign in 1837. The new portrait shows Victoria sumptuously clothed in intricately detailed robes wearing the famous St. Edward’s Crown used in the coronations of English monarchs since the time of Charles II. Just 8,000 of those Wyon originals were initially struck and are today among the most coveted British coins in existence—that is, if you can find one!
Using a digital scan of an original Gothic Crown held in The Royal Mint’s archives, the talented craftsmen at the mint enhanced the original’s detail and removed the blemishes of time to create a piece of incredible beauty and quality. The coin’s obverse features the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by former Royal Mint designer Jody Clark.
Flawless Proofs From Among The First Released
Struck in two ounces of 99.99% pure gold, this legal-tender £200 coin comes in spectacular Proof condition, meaning that it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. In fact, each coin available here has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended.
In addition, NGC has certified that each proof is a First Releases (FR) coin, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository within the first 30 days of their release. Collectors seek out these coins because they are produced with new dies and considered to have sharper strikes and deeper mirrors than those that are struck later. Plus, each coin will come sonically sealed in a museum-quality acrylic slab and encapsulated with a special Tower Bridge label. The coins will also be accompanied by their original mint packaging and accompanied by a storybook and a mint-issued Certificate of Authenticity.
