Modern Technology Breathes New Life Into One Of The Most Famous Coins Ever Minted

When it comes world-class designers producing beautiful coins, Great Britain’s world-renowned Royal Mint is unsurpassed. To pay homage to its historic engravers and their greatest masterpieces, the Royal Mint is breathing new life into those iconic designs thanks to modern striking techniques. That means that now, two centuries later, collectors have the chance to own the world’s most sought-after coin designs with an epic series of limited-edition gold and silver Proofs.

Here you can secure one of the world’s most sought-after designs through 2024’s release of “The Great Engravers” series that features the famed Pistrucci Gartered Crown. The sixth year in the series, the design was originally intended for a medal commemorating Great Britain’s victory in 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo, which marked the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Designed by Italian gem engraver Benedetto Pistrucci, the design of Saint George Slaying the dragon—symbolic of Great Britain triumphing over Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army—was so popular that it was also used for the gold five-pound piece and silver crowns struck during the reign of King George IV.

Produced Using Digital Scan Of Original Coin

Using a digital scan of an original 1818 Pistrucci Gartered Crown held in The Royal Mint’s archives, the talented craftsmen at the mint enhanced the original’s detail and removed the blemishes of time to create a piece of incredible beauty and quality. It even features unique raised edge lettering that reads “DECUS ET TUTAMEN” which means “An Ornament and a Safeguard.” This feature is a holdover from the early days of coin minting when the phrase was put on coin edges to discourage clipping of the silver. Also on the edge is raised edge lettering that reads “ANNO REGNI II" means “Year of Reign,” followed by the year of King Charles III’s reign. Encircling the famous Pistrucci design is a garter with an inscription that reads: “HONI ● SOIT ● QUI ● MAL ● Y ● PENSE,” the abbreviated Latin motto of the Order of the Garter which means “Shame on him who thinks evil of it.” The artist’s name, “PISTRUCCI,” appears below the design. The coin’s obverse features the first official coin portrait of Charles III by British sculptor Martin Jennings.

An Internationally Recognized Symbol Of British Wealth And Power

For centuries, Benedetto Pistrucci’s Saint George and the Dragon design has graced British Gold Sovereign, an internationally recognized symbol of British wealth and power. Pistrucci was inspired to use the design of Saint George and the Dragon after meeting English Countess Lady Lavinia Spencer, who showed him a model of St. George—the patron saint of England—and asked him to make another “in the Greek style. Pistrucci took it a step further and suggested to William Wellesley Pole, Master of the Mint, that the St. George design would be a suitable subject for England’s new Sovereign coin. Pole agreed and decided that Pistrucci’s design was the ideal choice for the reverse for the new gold coin.
