The Tragic Story Behind Nicholas II’s Imperial Coronation

Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé’s name is synonymous with opulent, egg-shaped ornaments decorated with gemstones and precious metals. Known today as Fabergé Eggs, as many as 69 were created, all of which were fashioned under the supervision of Fabergé himself. One of the most famous was the Imperial Coronation Egg given by Russia’s Nicholas II to his wife, Alexandra Feodorovna in 1897 to commemorate their coronation as Tsar and Tsarina of Russia the year before. While there’s little chance that you’d ever be able to own the original—it resides in the Museum of St Petersburg and is valued at around $18 million dollars—you CAN own a numismatic reproduction of this famous gem thanks to this extremely limited edition of high-relief proofs that showcase the famous Imperial Coronation Fabergé Egg in painstaking detail!

Breathtaking Ultra High Relief Proof

This magnificent coin was created with Ultra High Relief (UHR) designs using CIT’s (Coin Invest Trust) Smartminting® technology to beautifully accentuate its brilliant detail. Plus, the addition of the selective use of beautiful colorization combined with partial gold gilting creates an overall presentation that is simply breathtaking! Each coin was struck in two ounces of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and includes a background of delicate floral ornaments in light relief. Flowing across the top of the design are inscriptions that read, “Peter Carl Fabergé” and “Imperial, Coronation Egg.” The coin’s obverse shows Mongolia’s Coat of Arms, denomination, and silver weight & purity. Plus, each coin available in this offer comes in gorgeous Proof condition, meaning they were expertly crafted from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.

A Coronation Ruined By A Stampede

Created with multicolored gold, diamonds, and Guilloche ornaments, the Imperial Coronation Egg also held a secret hidden mini replica of the coronation carriage. But just as the Imperial Coronation Egg holds a special place in the hearts of collectors, it is also a symbol of tragedy. Just a few days after the coronation, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Moscow’s Khodynskoe Field for a festival provided by the Tsar. A rumor spread that there was not enough beer, pretzels, and commemorative mugs for everyone in attendance causing the crowd to surge forward. Poor planning meant that the rumors were true—and as the crowd pushed forward, frightened vendors began throwing what food and gifts they did have into the crowd causing an even greater frenzy. When it was all over, around 1,400 people had been trampled to death and another 4,000 has sustained serious injuries. In what would be the first of several bad decisions by Nicholas II during his reign, he did not cancel the festivities. The tragedy served to undermine his authority as many people from the lowest peasant to the highest members of Moscow society considered his refusal to stop the parties disrespectful to the victims
