Fabulous Official Restrike Of The Famous Dutch “Scheepjesschelling” Coin

At its peak during the early 1700s, Dutch shipping accounted for between half and two-thirds of all Asian goods imported into Europe. So, it’s no surprise that when Europe’s most powerful nations cast their eyes on the New World that the Netherlands played a leading role. It was at this time that the Dutch struck a trading coin, the “Scheepjesschelling,” that was a message to the rest of Europe that emphasized the Netherlands’ status as a naval power. It’s image of a sleek and powerful Dutch warship seemed to be telling other countries to mess with them at your own peril. Now you can get a dazzling official restrike of that famous “Ship Shilling” coin released in 2024 by the Dutch Royal Mint—the same mint that struck the original coins more than 300 years ago when the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, and France were all competing for the juiciest slices of the New World’s economic pie!

Gorgeous Restrike From One Of Europe’s Most Famous Locations

Though not a legal-tender coin, this commemorative was struck in 11.29 grams of 99.9% pure gold and is part an annual series that depicts the famous Dutch sailing ship. Dutch ships, already built to fish the shallow waters near the coast, turned out to be quite efficient at transporting cargo across the stormy Baltic and North Seas, as well as being able to withstand the thousands of miles required to traverse the waters of Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in search of exotic spices, tea, coffee, drugs, perfumes, dyestuffs, sugar, and saltpeter.

The design is a restrike of the famous 1706 Scheepjesschelling from the province of Gelderland. Known as Guelders in English, Gelderland is the largest province of the Netherlands by land area, and second by total area. It’s capital Arnhem, was the site of the 1944 Battle of Arnhem in World War II where the famous John Frost Bridge became “A Bridge Too Far” for the Allies in their attempt to liberate the city during Operation Market Garden, a failed attempt to cross the Lower Rhine River and create an invasion route into Northern Germany. The obverse of this One-Ounce Silver Scheepjesschelling shows a warship along with a legend that reads: “VIGILATE.DEO.CONFIDENTES,” which means “Trusting on God’.” The reverse shows Gelderland’s provincial coat of arms and the inscription: “MO.ARG.ORD:DVC.GELETCZ,” which means “New coin for the Duchy of Gelderland and the County of Zutphen.”
