Anne Frank Gold Stamp

Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was a German-born Dutch-Jewish girl whose diary, posthumously published as The Diary of a Young Girl, became one of the best-known books in the world. Translated in more than 70 languages, the diary documents Frank and her family’s life as they hid from the Adolf Hitler’s Nazis during Germany’s occupation of the Netherlands during the second world war.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Dutch Postal service elected to pay tribute to Anne Frank and her diary by issuing a postage stamp crafted in highly pure 99.9% fine gold. Measuring 30 mm x 40 mm, his stamp is One Euro legal tender and depicts the famous portrait of Anne Frank taken for a passport photo. The photo was taken in 1942 when Anne was 12 years old. At the bottom of the photo you can read the salutation “Dear Kitty.” Kitty was the fictional friend to whom Anne Frank wrote many of her diary letters.

Betrayed to the Gestapo, Anne and her family were captured in August 1944 and shipped off to the dreaded Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz where they soon became victims of the Holocaust. Anne and her sister, Margot, were later transferred to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they are thought to have died in March of 1945 less than a month before British forces liberated the overcrowded and unsanitary camp. Thanks to her diary published after the war, Anne Frank’s name has lived on and become synonymous around the world as a rallying cry against the horrors of persecution.

Only 5,000 of these beautiful gold stamps have been approved by the Dutch Postal Service. It’s a heartbreaking-yet vitally important tribute to the millions of victims who lost their lives during World War II.
