Honoring the Heroes of Operation Market Garden

Operation Market Garden was the Allied effort to liberate the Netherlands from Nazi control during World War II. From September 17–25, 1944, forces from Great Britain, Poland, Canada and the United States attacked from both air and land in a furious assault on Hitler’s “Fortress Europe” in an attempt to end the war by Christmas.

Produced in .05 grams of highly pure 99.9% gold and approved by the Dutch Postal Service, this action-packed stamp honors the heroes of Operation Market Garden. Measuring 40 mm x 30 mm, the stamp shows a pair of paratroopers, one American and one British, out on patrol while their comrades fill the skies with parachutes from transport planes flying high above. It’s a stirring image that takes on an almost vintage quality thanks to the amber-colored gold used to craft the stamp.

Immortalized by the 1977 film “A Bridge Too Far,” Operation Market Garden was the brainchild of British General Bernard Law Montgomery. “Monty” planned a bold strike through Holland that would deliver a knockout blow against German troops thought to be spread thin. The plan was to seize and control five bridges through Holland into Germany. Though the campaign succeeded in seizing several bridges, freeing the Dutch cities of Eindhoven and Nijmegen, and creating a 60-mile salient into German-held territory, it failed to capture the final bridge at Arnhem where, unbeknownst to the Allies, two SS panzer divisions were stationed for refitting. Arnhem eventually fell to the Allies in April 1945.
