The Eisenhower Silver Dollar
Here you can secure the Grand Heritage Commemorative that pays tribute to the Eisenhower Dollar. Also known as the Ike Dollar, the Eisenhower Silver Dollar is a distinctive coin that pays tribute to the 34th President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Despite the name “Silver Dollar,” these coins do not contain silver, in contrast to earlier silver dollars in U.S. coinage. Instead, the coin was composed of a copper-nickel clad outer layer bonded to an inner core of pure copper. The obverse of the coin features a bold and lifelike portrait of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The design was created by Frank Gasparro, the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The president’s profile is complemented by the inscription “LIBERTY” and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse of the coin depicts an adaptation of the Apollo 11 mission insignia, commemorating the historic moon landing in 1969. An eagle, clutching an olive branch, descends to the lunar surface with Earth in the background. The Earth is represented by a globe with the continental United States facing the viewer. The reverse also includes the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the denomination “ONE DOLLAR.” On these oversized reverse Proofs, the specifications take the place of the denomination. The Eisenhower Silver Dollar was minted from 1971 to 1978. The coin was issued to honor President Eisenhower’s legacy and to celebrate the achievements of the Apollo 11 mission.
