Standing 6' 7" tall, the Venus de Milo was carved by Alexandros of Antioch sometime between 160 and 110 B.C. According to art historians, the sculpture at one time had arms. In fact, recent scientific analysis proves that a marble hand holding an apple discovered near the statue was part of the original piece. The apple is identified as the mythological Apple of Discord—a golden apple dropped by Eris, goddess of strife, at wedding reception after not being invited to the ceremony. Symbolic of how a small matter can lead to a bigger dispute, the apple sparked a vanity-fueled dispute among Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite that eventually led to the Trojan War. As for the other missing limbs, some historians claim that the arms were broken off soon after the sculpture’s discovery in 1820 during a fight that broke out on the shore of Melos between French and Turkish sailors vying for possession of the statue.
