This noisy bird gets its name from the purple-colored crest that rises above its green head like a mohawk hairdo. The national bird of the Swaziland in eastern South Africa, the bird’s brilliant red, blue, green and purple feathers are important in the ceremonial regalia of the Swazi royal family. These birds grow to around 17 inches long and are incredibly agile, preferring to race across tree branches in search of fruit to eat rather than peck at seeds on the ground.

The coin’s obverse design features a map of South Africa that indicates the location of the country’s UNESCO-recognized Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve.
