South Africa’s First-Ever Colored Coin Series Continues!
In 2017 the South African Mint, home of the world-famous Krugerrand, released its first-ever colored coin series. That four-coin series featured some of the region’s most beautiful birds and flora – and collectors went wild. The series returned for a third year in 2019 with four new coins, including these gorgeous Impala Lily Proofs.
Struck in 92.5% Sterling silver and displaying a legal-tender value of 5 Rand, the Impala Lily Proof shines beautifully under the fully colorized flowers on the reverse. Beautiful-yet-deadly, this thick-stemmed shrub can grow to more than 3 feet tall. local legends describe tales of African Bushman using the toxins from the Impala Lily as poisons for their arrowheads. The plant’s toxins are also harmful to animals, though they are seldom eaten by domestic stock. Impala Lilies are enticing, however, with their star-shaped pink-trimmed leaves earning it the nicknames of Desert Rose and Sabi Star.
The coin’s obverse design features a map of South Africa that indicates the location of the country’s UNESCO-recognized Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve. This pocket of land in northeastern South Africa exists not only to conserve and protect nature and wildlife, but also serves as a living laboratory where humans co-exist with nature.
Just 1,500 of these vibrant legal-tender proofs were struck and each will come shipped in its original government-issued blister pack card and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
