Liberty & Britannia: The Strength Of The Free World

The relationship between the United States and Great Britain was perhaps best summed up by former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill after meeting with American President Franklin Roosevelt during the early days of World War II when he said that the strength of the partnership between the two nations was the strength of the free world. That strength is clearly in evidence on a series of new coins and medals produced in collaboration by the U.S. Mint and the Royal Mint that features allegorical figures of Liberty and Britannia. It’s just the second time the two mints have collaborated on a coin project and the first time that the chief engravers of both mints have worked together to produce a single design!

A Clever Juxtaposition Of Two Allegorical Figures

The design features a clever juxtaposition of the two allegorical figures representing each country—Lady Liberty as designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph F. Menna and Britannia designed by Gordon Summer, the Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint. Presented as complementary and balancing elements reminiscent of the faces on a playing card, Liberty is depicted with stars twinkling stars shining in her loose flowing hair while Britannia is shown wearing a Corinthian helmet pushed back to reveal her lovely face and luxurious hair. Each figure also holds her respective symbol: Britannia her trident, and Liberty her torch.

Each mint struck this design on the reverse side of its coins and medals with the British version’s obverse featuring the portrait of King Charles III and the American’s obverse version—also designed by Joseph Menna—depicting a bristlecone pine on the left with an English yew tree on the right. They are separated by the Atlantic Ocean with a sun rising above it, heralding new possibilities for both nations. Here you can secure the U.S. Mint’s version struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver at the West Point branch mint. This non-legal tender medal also comes in gorgeous Proof condition meaning it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.

Flawless Medals From Among The First Issued

What’s more, each medal available here has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 Ultra Cameo (PF70UC) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded proofs have ZERO imperfections—showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has certified that these proofs are First Day of Issue (FDI) medals, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date.

The Historic Alliance Between United States And Great Britain

Close friends and allies, the historic alliance between United States and Great Britain was founded on shared values and common beliefs. These two great nations share a thriving economic relationship, leadership in science and technology, and deep ties between their people and civil societies. They also see eye to eye on a wide range of important global priorities that ensure security and prosperity not only for the two nations but for the world. The coins and medals of the Liberty and Britannia Program are further proof of this special relationship.
