The Vatican’s Bronze Rooster Statue And What It Symbolizes

The design shows the rooster of Saint Peter—a bronze statue preserved in the Treasury Museum of Saint Peter’s Basilica—while in the background is an image of the Apostle Peter. The rooster, which is usually connected to the apostle Peter, is a reminder of Jesus’ prophecy that Peter would deny him. This prophecy was fulfilled the morning following Jesus’s arrest and Peter, overtaken with fear, pretended not to recognize him before repenting and crying bitterly over it. Basing her design on the belief that Jesus knows that Peter will be the rock on which His Church will be built, coin artist Daniela Fusco depicts Peter holding keys, symbols of his spiritual authority and his role as the guardian to the gates of Paradise.
