A New World Hoard of French Musketeer Colonial Coins

With his Edict of May in 1710, King Louis XIV of France ordered the striking of a new coin specifically for trade in the New World’s French Colonies. That coin turned out to be the French 30-Denier and thousands of them found their way across the Atlantic Ocean where they circulated widely from Canada to New Orleans.

Fast forward 300 years later to a shop in Hampshire, England where the owner was doing some repair work on his 400-year-old building. Much to his surprise he discovered a large, sealed glass jar buried under the floorboards chock full of French 30-Denier coins! How the French coins ended up buried under an English shop is anyone’s guess, but it’s more than likely they had crisscrossed the Atlantic before being stored away for safekeeping and forgotten.

Now you can own a piece of this “New World Hoard” of French Colonies 30-Deniers, each piece graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being Genuine. The design of these historically significant coins is also noteworthy. On the obverse is a fleur-de-lis and two “Ls” representing Louis XIV – the Great Sun King. The coin’s reverse shows a cross, which led to them being called Mousquetaires because the cross resembled the emblem emblazoned on the sleeveless coats worn by the Musketeers of the Guard, an elite military unit that served as the personal bodyguards of the French King – and the basis for the Alexandre Dumas classic adventure novel, The Three Musketeers.

Struck in 1711, these coins also display the “D” mintmark signifying that they were struck at the Lyon Mint specifically for colonial export. Each was struck in 4.5 grams of billon, an alloy most commonly comprised of a small amount of silver and a large base metal base content, most commonly copper. Each will come housed in a Story Vault coin holder that includes both the PCGS-graded coin and an informative storycard.
