Civil War-Dated Indian Head Cent

On April 12, 1861, Confederate forces fired upon Fort Sumter, starting off what would be four years and 31 days of the American Civil War. During the war, the United States Mint struck copper-nickel cents featuring Liberty wearing a Native American headdress. Known as the Indian Head Cent, this coin began to disappear from circulation during the war, as frightened citizens began to hoard them for their metal contents. In response, the U.S. Mint changed the coin’s composition to bronze in 1864. Here you can secure one of these Civil War-dated Indian Head Cents in Good to Fine (G–F) condition, dated between 1861 and 1864. Date varies.
