A Diverse Group Of Prominent American Women

These quarters honor a broad and diverse group of prominent American women who made significant contributions in a variety of fields, including suffrage, civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and the arts. The women honored are from ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse backgrounds. The five women honored in 2023 include:

• BESSIE COLEMAN. Bessie Coleman (1892–1926) was a pilot, advocate, and pioneer who flew to great heights as the first African American and first Native American woman pilot and first African American to earn an international pilot’s license. She died in a plane crash after a wrench used to service the engine had jammed the controls.
• EDITH KANAKA'OLE. Edith Kanakaʻole (1913–1979) was an indigenous Hawaiian composer, chanter, kumu hula, and custodian of native culture, traditions, and natural land. Affectionately called “Aunty Edith,” she was also led the highly celebrated dance school, Hālau o Kekuhi.
• ELEANOR ROOSEVELT. Former First lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884–1962) was an author, civil liberties and human rights advocate, Chairperson of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, and was instrumental in the passage of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
• JOVITA IDAR. Jovita Idar (1885–1946) was a Mexican-American journalist, teacher, political activist, and civil rights worker who championed the cause of Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants. She helped organize the first Mexican American civil rights conference in 1911 to address racism, lynching, and dismal educational opportunities for Mexican American children.
• MARIA TALLCHIEF. Maria Tallchief (1925–2013) was America’s first major prima ballerina who broke barriers as a Native American ballerina. In 1947, she became the first American to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet and was the prima ballerina of first the Ballet Society, a forerunner of the New York City Ballet, and then the American Ballet Theatre, also in New York.

Laura Gardin Fraser’s Beloved Washington Design

In addition to the one-year-only designs, this series features a new obverse design by American sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser that features a portrait of George Washington facing right, surrounded by the inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2022.” Fraser originally created this design in 1931 as her entry in the competition for the 1932 Washington Quarter that was struck to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Washington’s birth. Her design was recommended by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, but John Flannigan’s left facing Washington design was ultimately selected. Fraser’s obverse design was later used in 1999 on the George Washington Commemorative Gold $5 Coin.
