The coin continued to be struck for circulation with that silver content for five years until the Mint abruptly issued no circulating half dollars in 1970. When the coin returned for circulation in 1971 it was bereft of silver and was instead issued as a copper nickel-clad coin.

POPULAR DESIGN OF A FALLEN PRESIDENT – Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ bust of President John F. Kennedy, the Kennedy Half-Dollar was first struck in 1964 and was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen President. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin’s reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965.

STRUCK IN SILVER – Kennedy Half Dollars issued from 1965 to 1969 were struck in 11.5 grams of 40% silver. No half dollars were struck for circulation in 1970 and beginning in 1971 they were issued as nickel-clad copper coins. It was the only coin in circulation at that time to contain silver.
