1920–1929-S Lincoln Cents Nine-Piece Set

For more than 100 years, the Lincoln Cent has been a familiar coin. Designed by Victor David Brenner, it was originally issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth and was the first coin to depict the likeness of an actual person compared to all other previous coin series that depicted various renderings of Liberty. For the first 50 years of its run from 1909 to 1958, the coins were called “Wheatback Cents” for their distinctive wheat ears that appeared on the reverse. The wheat ears were replaced by the Lincoln Memorial beginning in 1959.

Wheaties From Prohibition And The Roaring ’20s

Most of these pennies have long since disappeared, but here you have a nine-piece set of Lincoln Wheatback Cents featuring all the dates struck during the 1920s, at the San Francisco Mint, which struck only 11% of the total mintage and did not strike a Lincoln Cent in 1922. Of all the Lincoln Wheat Cents issues, the 1926-S has the 10th smallest mintage, and the 1923-S has the 16th smallest mintage. The decade of 1920 to 1929 encompasses Prohibition and the Roaring ’20s. It was also a time during which less than 4% of all Wheat Cents were struck!
