The Year the Washington Monument Opened to the Public!

Produced by the historic New Orleans mint, the 1888-O Morgan Silver Dollar is already have a beautiful collectible, with its birthplace evocative of Big Easy bayous, jazz music and enormous antebellum mansions. But that particular year's Morgans also marked the date of the public opening of the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. Both the world's tallest stone structure and the world's tallest obelisk, the Washington Monument had been under construction since 1848. For a time, it was the world's tallest monument -- an impressive historical feat! Now you can hold that memory in your hands with an 1888 Morgan Silver Dollar from GovMint.com.

Designed by George T. Morgan, 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the obverse of the Morgan Silver Dollar depicts Lady Liberty with stars above her head, surrounded by the words "LIBERTY," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date 1888. The coin's reverse features a bald eagle soaring upward as it clutches an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Inscribed on the reverse are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" in archaic lettering, along with "O" to indicate your coin was minted at the historic New Orleans Mint.
