Masters of Coin Design: Natanya Van Niekerk

Masters of Coin Design: Natanya Van Niekerk

After a highly acclaimed over 27-year career as a coin designer, Natanya Van Niekerk’s holistic approach to numismatics has left a distinctive mark on the industry. Her unique designs incorporated elements of current political events and scenery from her native South African environment. Learn more about Natanya Van Niekerk’s award-winning coin designs.

Who Is Natanya Van Niekerk?

Natanya Van Niekerk was born in South Africa and pursued a career in fine arts before venturing into the world of legal tender coins. Though the miniature details of coin art and engravings differed from her previous experience, Van Niekerk’s background equipped her with a sense of visual history and design that ultimately gave her coin designs their distinctive style.

Natanya Van Niekerk’s work as a coin artist began during significant political movements in her home country. Nelson Mandela took office as the first president of South Africa just three weeks before Van Niekerk started as a coin designer, marking the beginning of a few “golden years” for the country. “We were in an industry that had to capture these exciting times in precious metal,” Van Niekerk said. “We told stories and saw the change from the ‘Old South Africa’ to the ‘New South Africa,’ to where we are today.”

Natanya Van Niekerk and the South African Mint

As Natanya Van Niekerk’s career progressed, she made history as the first official coin designer for the South African Mint. The appointment allowed her to focus on developing and evolving coin designs for South African commemorative coinage. When she first arrived at the mint in 1994, Van Niekerk quickly made her mark by helping design the new Natura series, which featured South African wildlife in natural poses surrounded by their native environment. Up until that point, most animal coin series only featured animals on plain fields in broadside poses.

The South African Mint now has over 120 years of experience producing coins and has established itself as Africa’s leading manufacturer of commemorative and collectible coins and bullion. During her time there, Natanya Van Niekerk developed a close relationship with the great South African Mint chief die sinker Arthur Sutherland, who helped develop Van Niekerk’s artistic abilities and coin designs, and Ed Harbuz, the mint’s managing director.

Natanya Van Niekerk’s work at the mint produced nearly 20 award-winning coin designs, including nine Mint Directors Conference (MDC) awards, three Coin of the Year (COTY) category awards, and two overall COTY awards in 1999 and 2011. Her most famous work is the South Africa Natura series, which accounts for most of her awards.

Natanya’s Work with Metal Concentrators

After 19 years at the South African Mint, Natanya Van Niekerk left to take a position as Head of Branding and Product Development for Brand Refinery and then, in 2016, joined Metal Concentrators—South Africa’s largest privately owned gold refinery—as Manager of Product Development. Under Van Niekerk’s direction, Metal Concentrators became the first metal refinery in the world to create a range of sculpted bullion: Nguni bulls and cows and nail-sized cowrie shells in gold and silver crown.

Natanya Van Niekerk wanted to “create something that in two thousand years will still represent this time, this era we’ve lived in and which will still represent this country.” The Nguni bulls, cows, and cowrie shells inspired the bullion design, as these symbols have long represented wealth for African natives.

Notable Coin Designs from Natanya Van Niekerk

Van Niekerk’s over 27-year career as a coin artist and bullion designer culminated with her being awarded the prestigious COTY Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, which recognized her continued contributions to coin design and development. Others often modeled her unique coin designs, many of which were created in various art forms. Enjoy a brief tour of some of the most beautiful Natanya Van Niekerk coins.

1994-1998 1 Rand – Natura Coin Series

From 1994-1998, Van Niekerk’s Natura coin series featured the Big Five: lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants, and African buffaloes. One species was represented each year on beautiful coins in weights of tenth, quarter, half, and one ounce. The Natura coin designs were Natanya Van Niekerk’s first award-winning contributions as a coin artist—the 1996 elephant and 1997 African buffalo designs each won an MDC award, while the 1998 leopard design won a Singapore coin show award.

1997 1 Rand – Women of South Africa

Van Niekerk’s first overall COTY winner was her 1997 Women of South Africa design. At the time, South African women were one of the most vulnerable groups in the country, and Van Niekerk’s Women of South Africa coin reflected the burden of marginalization through its highly emotive design. The coin features a woman’s solemn face partially separated from the African landscape and the moon’s surface, representing the critical and binding role of a woman to her country.

2002-2004 Wildcats of Africa Coin Series

Part of the Natura series, the Wildcats of Africa theme featured a different African wild cat each year, all struck in 24-carat gold. Starting with the cheetah in 2002 and followed by the lion (2003) and caracal (2004), each release followed a four-coin gold format depicting the cats in various natural settings. Collectors seek these coins due to their detailed craftsmanship, limited mintages, and stunning portrayals of Africa’s iconic wild cats.

2004 25 Rand / 1 Oz – 10th Anniversary Democracy

Natanya Van Niekerk’s 2004 25 Rand 1 oz coin is part of the South African Mint’s Protea series and commemorates the 10th anniversary of the country’s democracy. The coin’s reverse, which was designed by Van Niekerk, features a portrait of Nelson Mandela—symbolizing his pivotal role in ending apartheid and establishing a democratic government—while the obverse features the Protea flower, a common symbol of South Africa. The coin represents Van Niekerk’s overarching goal of immortalizing significant South African history and images in gold coinage.

2005-2008 Giants of Africa Coin Series

From 2005-2008, Van Niekerk continued the Natura collection with her Giants of Africa series. She dedicated these coin designs to Africa’s iconic, massive wildlife and, like the other series in the Natura collection, it featured a new animal each year. Giants of Africa depicted a hippopotamus, giraffe, eland, and elephant, with the 2006 giraffe 100 Rand coin design winning an MDC award.

2005 25 Rand / 1 Oz – Albert John Luthuli

Albert John Lithuli was the next subject of Van Niekerk’s series of historical figures within the Protea series. Luthuli received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for his nonviolent resistance to racial inequality. The coin, made of 99.9% gold, features a detailed portrait of Luthuli on the reverse, which was the side designed by Natanya Van Niekerk.

2006 25 Rand / 1 Oz – Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu

Van Niekerk’s next historical subject to be immortalized in gold within the Protea series was Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu, who helped dismantle apartheid and served as the first black Archbishop of Cape Town. The proof coin had a limited mintage—only 1,634 pieces—making it a sought-after collector’s coin. The reverse, which was designed by Van Niekerk, shows a portrait of Archbishop Tutu with a “Nobel Laureate” inscription, while the obverse depicts the King Protea flower.

2007 25 Rand / 1 Oz – FW de Klerk and NR Mandela

The following year, Van Niekerk designed a coin commemorating Frederik Willem de Klerk and Nelson Mandela for their contributions to establishing democracy in South Africa. The coin’s reverse, which was designed by Van Niekerk, displays de Klerk and Mandela’s portraits with the year “1993,” commemorating their Nobel Peace Prize. Like the other coins in the series, the obverse shows a detailed image of the King Protea.

2008 25 Rand / 1 Oz – Mahatma Gandhi

In 2008, again as part of the Protea series, Van Niekerk designed the reverse of a pure-gold coin depicting one of the most influential figures in history: Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was best known for his principles of truth and nonviolence and his role in laying the groundwork for future racial equality movements. The reverse of the coin features a portrait of a young Gandhi as a lawyer in South Africa, along with the inscription “My Life is My Message.”

2008 5 Rand – Nelson Mandela 90th Birthday

The most widely-circulated coin designed by Natanya Van Niekerk and minted by the South African Mint was a bi-metallic copper and nickel coin commemorating the 90th birthday of South Africa’s first post-apartheid president. The coin was designed to allow all South Africans to share in Nelson Mandela’s legacy and depicts a smiling Mandela in his signature patterned shirt—a stark departure from Van Niekerk’s traditional portrayal of historical figures.

2009-2010 – Safari Through Africa Coin Series

The final release of the Natura series, Safari Through Africa, showcases South African endangered wildlife. The 2009 and 2010 coins featured the white and black rhino, respectively. Minted in sizes from 1/10 oz to 1 oz, the coins symbolized efforts to raise awareness of endangered species and were issued in limited mintages.

2024 Light of Liberty #2 – Samoa

Lady Liberty has been a mainstay of U.S. coinage since the earliest official coinage in 1792, and the Light of Liberty trilogy expands her presence to coins designed by non-U.S. citizen coin artists. Natanya van Niekerk’s contribution to the trilogy depicts a strong Lady Liberty striding forward next to a river with her torch in hand and the Big Five African animals behind her.
