History of China’s Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is a longstanding Chinese tradition with roots stretching back over 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty, where it began with emperors worshipping the moon. Evolving through the ages, it achieved prominence as a public celebration in the Song Dynasty and today stands as China’s second-most-important festival after the Chinese New Year. Similar to Thanksgiving in the United States, this festival is a time for families to reunite, give thanks for the harvest, and pray for blessings such as longevity, prosperity, and family well-being. Now a public holiday, the Mid-Autumn Festival continues to be a cherished time of festivity, reflection, and communal gratitude. Each Moon Festival Panda honors this holiday and its rich history throughout the dynasties.

Moon Festival Panda Designs
Since 2015, the China Mint has issued unique designs for each annual release of the Moon Festival Panda series. The issues in the Moon Festival Panda series are not legal tender and do not carry a face value, instead, they are considered medals.
For the first Moon Festival Panda released in 2015, the obverse design captures a quiet scene with a large panda perched on a bamboo brand, gazing contemplatively at the full moon in the night sky, framed by the inscription “MOON FESTIVAL” in both English and Chinese, as well as the medal's weight, and its purity. This issue also featured space-flown gold for the moon element. The reverse design features the majestic Great Wall of China alongside the ancient Chinese armillary sphere, a sophisticated astronomical instrument that dates back to the 1st century B.C., alluding to China’s rich history of scientific ingenuity.
Each year since the Moon Festival Panda series has embraced innovation and captivated collectors with an evolving array of design elements. In 2016, the series introduced its first Piedfort pieces, distinguished by their doubled thickness. The 2017 Moon Festival Panda added a new dimension with special holographic accents, enhancing the visual appeal. The years 2018 and 2019 marked a first for the series with the incorporation of White and Red Jade gemstones into the reverse, adding a touch of opulent symbolism. 2020 marked the first time the series released a titanium medal, while 2021 combined super incuse and high relief techniques to stunning effect. Most recently, 2022's edition showcased a selectively plated, blackened metal finish on the panda alongside a "Lucky-8" privy mark, celebrating the eighth anniversary of this innovative series.
2023 Moon Festival Panda Design
For the 2023 editions in this series, a stunning “shimmering” effect is put in place along the leafy bamboo and moon elements of the design. This advanced effect is achieved through unique technology that etches hundreds of angles in the “colored” areas of the design. Black and white elements are also used to contrast the proof and frosted surfaces. Gold and silver versions are available for the 2023 Moon Festival Panda, which are composed of 99.9% pure gold and 99.9% pure silver, respectively.
Struck at Shenzhen Guobao Mint!
The Moon Festival Panda series is struck at the Shenzhen Guobao Mint, one of three official mints in China. The mint’s “Z” mint mark seldom appears on the China Panda series releases, so its inclusion on the Moon Festival Panda series is notable!
