Who Is Emily Damstra?
Emily S. Damstra began her career as an illustrator in the early 2000s after earning her Master of Fine Arts in Science Illustration from the University of Michigan. Her early work—fueled by her love for nature—explored a range of botanical, ecological, and cultural subjects and showcased her attention to detail. Since 2002, Damstra has featured her science illustrations in over 20 publications and over 30 exhibits, as well as on interpretive signs around zoos and museums.
Emily Damstra resides in the Great Lakes region, drawing inspiration from the beautiful, natural scenery. Damstra's passion for storytelling and deep appreciation for learning about her subjects powers her full-time career as a self-employed artist. As recognition for her art grew, Damstra stepped into coin design in 2010, and the numismatic world finally saw the first of many Emily Damstra coins.
The U.S. Mint & The Royal Canadian Mint
Emily Damstra's career as a coin designer began in 2010 when she joined the Royal Canadian Mint. Dual citizenship in Canada and the U.S. allowed Damstra to work for both mints simultaneously, and she started with the U.S. Mint in 2014. Her focus as a coin designer is to create numismatic pieces that celebrate both countries' natural and cultural heritage, and her contributions to U.S. and Canadian coinage often feature highly detailed depictions of animals, national symbols, and historical figures.
The transition from traditional illustration to coin design challenged Damstra to minimize her detailed depictions of nature and wildlife to fit a coin-sized canvas. She succeeded, winning a Coin of the Year award for her 2016 Maple Canopy design, which put her on the modern list of coin designers to watch.
